Hello Offshore Fisheries community!

Thank you for subscribing to my newsletter! My mission is to provide people with the freshest seafood our precious ocean has to offer. I want to educate, inform and shed light on whats going on in a very isolated industry/community. Know where your food is coming from, how it's harvested and what do to do with it! I don't just want you to purchase seafood from me, I want you to experience what its like ON-DECK! I try and include all images taken by myself or fellow fisherman.

I'm excited to bring you the freshest updates every week. Find the latest pick-up details, ocean conditions from Half Moon Bay, and a Dungeness crab season update. Discover who caught this week's amazing catch and secure your order of Dungeness crab!

Ocean Report: Half Moon Bay

After a treacherous winter weather event of heavy wind and rain we've had a steady couple weeks of high pressure. This creates offshore winds that push from the east from the valley, grooming the ocean to make pleasant surface conditions, allowing smooth fishing and easier navigation. Temperatures are floating around 57 degrees which is normal and healthy for this time of year.

The catch has been pretty steady for most fisherman through out the region, favoring some spots just north of the Golden Gate. F/V Mr. Morgan (boat I work on) came in to offload their first full tank of crab and will be back out grinding away. While the fishing is steady, it is not the greatest opener we've seen. Other boats have reported spotty areas with some strings being abundant and others needing to be moved. Well dive more into individual boats next blog post, stay tuned!

Fresh Whole Dungeness Crab

Live, local, and sustainably harvested. These premium-grade Dungeness crabs are caught within 20 miles of the harbor and kept in seawater holding tanks until pickup day. Each crab weighs approximately 1.8-2.2 lbs.

The Perfect Crab Feast

Make the most of your fresh Dungeness with these simple tips:

Store live crabs in the refrigerator covered with damp newspaper until cooking time (ideally same day)

For the sweetest flavor, steam for 7 minutes per pound in salted water with bay leaves

Serve with melted garlic butter, sourdough bread, and a crisp local white wine for the perfect pairing

Save shells to make rich seafood stock for future chowders and stews

A word from the founder

My name is Brandon Chandler, and I am the founder of Offshore Fisheries LLC. I am dedicated to connecting consumers with ethically sourced food, and I look forward to sharing my experiences in the commercial fishing industry.

I've been a commercial fisherman for 7 years, starting in Southeast Alaska purse seining for pink salmon. I've also done a season in Bristol Bay for Sockeye Salmon. For the past 5 years I've worked on f/v Mr. Morgan out of Half Moon Bay, Scottish Seining for groundfish (Petrale Sole, Sand Dabs, Rockfish) and Crabbing for Dungeness Crab in the winter.

We are highly monitored by state and federal agencies for catch data to be reported and studied to keep our California and domestic fisheries healthy and sustainable. My goal is to provide this resource with a serious responsibility to the environment and to inform the public on where their seafood comes from.

I look forward to serving you and I hope you enjoy the experience!
